Khamzat Chimaev claims Stephen Thompson, Chris Weidman declined to fight him

It appears that the UFC is having a hard time finding an opponent for Khamzat Chimaev.

The undefeated Russian, who made a lot of noise with three UFC wins in less than 70 days, took on social media Friday to say that longtime octagon veterans Stephen Thompson and Chris Weidman were approached about a fight with him, but declined the offer.

“I just want to let my fans know and the people who support me the UFC offer me Wonderboy and he turned it down at 170,” Chimaev wrote, “and also Chris Weidman at 185, who also turned it down. I’m coming for everyone.”

Top-ranked welterweight Thompson (15-4-1) hasn’t fought since a decision victory over Vicente Luque in Nov. 2019, while Weidman (15-5), a former middleweight champion, recently celebrated his first victory in three years with an unanimous decision over Omari Akhmedov.

UFC president Dana White recently announced that Chimaev will headline a UFC card in December against a ranked opponent, but has yet to determine who will enter the cage to face the 9-0 Russian.

Chimaev joined the company in July, tapping John Phillips with a d’arce choke on Fight Island. He re-entered the octagon 10 days later to finish Rhys McKee inside one round. In his third UFC appearance, Chimaev dismantled Gerald Meerschaert in just 17 seconds.
